Ir Dr Ian McFeat-Smith BSc PhD, MHKIE, CEng is a qualified engineering geologist, mining and civil engineer. Research on the field performance of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) was followed by site supervision of Kielder Water Scheme TBM applications in UK, risk sharing contracts; and later from Hong Kong he was responsible for the development of underground systems for the Hong Kong MTR, Singapore MRT, Athens Metro and investigated multiple collapses of the SMART TBM tunnels in KL. He was also Independent Consultant for Risk Management Supervision of KCRC’s Kowloon South Link Railway – KDB200 as discussed in the presentation. He worked on major TBM tunnels for the Casecnan and Umiray-Angat projects in Central Luzon. He has published widely in the field of tunneling and in 1998 completed his book on Mechanised Tunnelling for Asia (see www.imstunnel.com).
As a Director of Charles Haswell Far East Ltd, then Atkins China Ltd, resident in Hong Kong since 1978, he was responsible for the introduction of modern tunnelling techniques for a wide range of tunnelling projects in difficult ground conditions that were completed on time and within budget. As a Director of IMS Tunnel Consultancy Ltd he currently provides expert witness services for many projects throughout Asia. He is an international specialist in tunneling and provides expert witness accounts of incidents for Clients, Contractors and Insurers on tunnel projects throughout Asia.
